GUATEMALA, SOUL OF THE EARTH

Feel Guatemala

Guatemala is a small but diverse Central American country situated south of Mexico.  Recently, Guatemala has adopted the slogan Soul of the Earth to describe the great natural and cultural diversity of this great country.

With more than 20 indigenous  Mayan languages and ecosystems ranging from tropical forests to high mountain forests, Guatemala is a great place to start your explorations into the complex world of  Applied Anthropology and Development Studies.

Still recovering from 36 years of Civil War and more than 500 years of colonialism, the country is currently undergoing rapid economic and sociocultural change. Traditional Maya culture co-exists with modern globalized economic policies and other current  phenomena like international immigration, accelerated environmental degradation, and high levels of poverty.

These issues have given way to intense activity work of NGOs and grass-roots organizations, which have resulted in a great variety of positive and negative experiences related to development. This context provides an intricate  scenario to collaborate and gain important  practical experience.
